   History of Chorode Grama Panchayath

Our Grama Panchayath, known as Chorode Grama Panchayath, consists of the revenue villages of Chorode, Vaikkilassery and Muttungal. However, in the early days, Muttungal was not part of Chorode Panchayath. At that time, development activities in the area were carried out under the direct control of the District Board.

The Chorode Panchayath, comprising the Chorode and Vaikkilassery villages, came into existence on 23 December 1945. At that time, the elected head of the Panchayath was known as the Bench Magistrate. Peedikakandi Raman Nambiar was the first Bench Magistrate. The Panchayath consisted of five members.

Later, an election system in which people voted by raising their hands was introduced. V. Sukumaran became the first President of the Panchayath elected under this system. V. Sukumaran and Aazhatt Illath Vasudevan Namboothiri made considerable sacrifices and endured many hardships for the early development of Chorode Grama Panchayath. V. Sukumaran was also elected as President of the Panchayath for a second term.

In 1963, Muttungal was also included within the jurisdiction of Chorode Panchayath. Thus, in 1963, the Grama Panchayath comprising the area of the present-day Chorode Grama Panchayath came into existence. A nine-member governing committee was elected in 1963, with V. P. Gopalan Master as President and R. M. Abdullah as Vice President. This governing committee continued in office and functioned for a period of 16 years.

After that, elections were held in 1979. A 10-member governing committee, with M. Dasan as President and M. Radhakrishnan Master as Vice President, governed the Panchayath for five years, until 1984. Subsequently, there was no elected governing committee for nearly three years.

Elections were held again in 1987, when the Panchayath had 12 wards. The governing committee, with T. V. Balan Master as President and M. K. Gopalan as Vice President, was dissolved in 1994.

Following the election held in 1995, a newly constituted 13-member governing committee came into existence, with Kunjappan Master as President, K. M. Narayanan as Vice President, and P. P. Chandrasekharan Master as the Chairman of the newly constituted Finance Standing Committee.

After completing its five-year term, a 17-member governing committee came into existence on 3 October 2000, with T. V. Balan Master as President, K. M. Narayanan as Vice President, K. Raghavan as Chairman of the Development Affairs Standing Committee, and N. T. Shaji as Chairman of the Welfare Affairs Standing Committee.

The term of this governing committee ended in October 2005. Subsequently, a 20-member governing committee came into existence, with K. S. Premakumari Teacher as President, E. Sreedharan as Vice President, K. Raghavan as Chairman of the Development Affairs Standing Committee, and T. M. Rajan as Chairman of the Welfare Affairs Standing Committee. This governing committee continued in office until 2 October 2000 as stated in the original record.

On 1 November 2010, a 21-member governing committee was in office, with A. Abubaker as President, K. P. Girija as Vice President, T. M. Rajan as Chairman of the Development Affairs Standing Committee, K. Suja as Chairperson of the Welfare Affairs Standing Committee, and P. K. Narayanan as Chairman of the Health and Education Standing Committee.

From 2015 to 2018, a governing committee was in office with Nali N. K. as President, O. M. Aziz Master as Vice President, K. Thulasi as Chairperson of the Development Affairs Standing Committee, V. C. Jameela as Chairperson of the Welfare Affairs Standing Committee, and K. Revathi as Chairperson of the Health and Education Standing Committee.

However, in 2018, due to certain political reasons, a new governing committee came into office, with Vijila Ambalath as President, K. K. Thulasi as Vice President, Reeja P. K. as Chairperson of the Development Affairs Standing Committee, V. C. Jameela as Chairperson of the Welfare Affairs Standing Committee, and K. Revathi as Chairperson of the Health and Education Standing Committee. This governing committee completed its term in November 2020.
